How FORM helped me build back my endurance

For much of Bianca Welds’ childhood and teenage years, the swimming pool was her life. For years, the competitive swimmer turned National Water Polo player was training twice a day, six days a week. The water felt like home. So it’s no surprise that years later, when Bianca decided to prioritize her fitness and make exercise a regular part of her life again, that she returned to her first love: swimming.

Bianca shared how her FORM goggles have helped her build back her endurance, get faster, and have helped keep her accountable and on track for her goals. Plus, she offers her top tips for getting the most out of your FORM goggles.

 

The Struggle with Staying Consistent 

Every few years, I would find myself trying to pick back up swimming as a part of a fitness push.  Usually, I would just look up workouts online or just make them up as I went along. I’ve also tried having an accountability swimming partner join me in the pool, but I always had trouble staying consistent and tracking my progress. Motivation was hard to maintain so I would stop after a couple months without making a lot of progress.

When I learned about FORM goggles, I was immediately intrigued. I wanted an easy way to track my swim workouts and monitor my progress as I improved. I loved the idea of having the workouts right there in the pool with me and being able to see live data on my swims and especially wanted to integrate with a heart rate monitor. FORM checked all of those boxes. 

Building Endurance and Getting Faster

FORM is helping me to significantly increase my daily volume and get back to where I can easily swim 200m, 400m and 800m distance intervals and this has really been aided by the plans feature. Before that, I was loading up workouts each week based on what I wanted to work on and building in my own progression, usually in terms of volume. So I’d select a technique or power workout, an endurance workout, and a recovery workout for the week and gradually increase the distance. Now, selecting a plan makes it so easy as the week’s workouts are loaded up for me and the plan has been designed by the FORM coaches to improve my swimming and build up my endurance and stamina.

I also love the tips provided to help me focus on different aspects of my swimming, and the plans definitely push me harder than I was pushing myself! I’ve increased my volume more rapidly than on my own and I can feel my strength improving each week.

Whether you pick a plan to start or just choose some workouts that look fun, the best tip I can give you is to stay consistent. Figure out the best way to work swimming into your schedule and stick with it. The gains may not be immediately trackable but you will feel the improvement and as you do more workouts, and look at the data you will realize the improvement is happening. 

3 Tips for Maximizing your FORM Goggles

To get the most out of your FORM goggles, I would suggest three things: 

  • Invest in a compatible heart rate monitor. The additional data is very useful to monitor how hard you are swimming.
  • Read the tips for each workout and pay attention to the areas it suggests you focus on. In the absence of a coach standing over you, this will help you improve your swimming technique really quickly. 
  • Share the love! You can follow other swimmers and they can follow you. Getting some support on your swims is very motivating. I also use the share feature to share a quick snapshot of my workout after each swim and this not only motivates me and keeps me accountable with many of my friends, but has also inspired several other people to start swimming again.
